Where do Nando’s chicken’s come from?

As a chicken restaurant group, we are committed to very high standards for our chickens. The quality of our core product is of the utmost importance to us and we believe that quality product and clear consciences can only be achieved if the welfare and health of the chickens are a priority for our business.

Nando’s uses barn-reared chickens. All our whole chickens, chicken breast fillets, wings, butterfly breasts and livers are sourced from the UK and supplied to us fresh - never frozen. Our whole chickens and chicken products are supplied to us by Cargill, Faccenda and Moy Park. In both the Republic and Northern Ireland, Crossgar distribute and supply our product. Our Halal chickens are from Freemans of Newent. All Nando’s suppliers adhere to an equivalent Red Tractor Farm Assured Standard - IKB (Integrated Chain Control).

The welfare of the chickens we use is of genuine importance to us and we know that our suppliers work to ensure that the chickens don’t suffer. The chickens are housed in deep littered, well-ventilated barns and they have constant access to food and water. They are fed feed and are free from antibiotic growth promoters. We can assure you of this because all producers comply with the Red Tractor farm assured standards.

Is there a difference between Nando’s Peri-Peri Sauces sold in the restaurant and the supermarkets?

Yes, you may notice a slight difference in the taste or flavour. The reason for this is because they are manufactured in different place to our restaurant sauces.

The sauces used in the restaurants are made in the UK and the sauces sold in supermarkets are made in South Africa and in a different UK factory. The recipes are the same but of course ingredients will vary depending on the source.

Is your chicken Free Range?

Nando’s uses barn-reared chickens. Our whole chickens are sourced from the UK and supplied to us fresh by Faccenda (for use in the UK), Crossgar (for use in Ireland) and Freemans of Newent, who supply our halal chickens.

We do not purchase battery reared chickens or any manufactured chicken product.

We insist on the highest standards of hygiene and quality from our suppliers, who comply with Red Tractor farm standards. Our barn-reared chickens are housed in deep littered, well-ventilated barns and have constant access to food and water.

As part of a continuous process of reviewing all aspects of our supply to make certain our products are properly and ethically sourced. We are also actively looking at RSPCA Freedom Foods and Free Range chicken. Nando’s prides itself in offering great tasting food at great value. Chicken welfare is of utmost importance however we also need to consider the price our customers are willing to pay.

Our chickens are marinated for at least 24 hours before being cooked. They are cooked in a special oven for an average cycle of 30 minutes, reaching a temperature of at least 75C, then kept in a warming draw at a temperature of 63C. Each chicken is then flame-grilled to order.

Is there anything on your Menu suitable for Vegans?

If you’re vegan or vegetarian we offer a veggie burger or pitta, but vegans need to specify “no mayonnaise” as mayo is a standard ingredient containing egg. You can have any baste as these are free of meat, egg and dairy products.

Please note that Nando’s are not vegetarian restaurants and do not imply in any literature that we are. However we do take specific steps to segregate our vegetarian product from chicken products as follows:

  • A separate area of the grill is defined for the exclusive cooking of vegetarian and bean burgers.
  • Separate utensils are always used with vegetable products.
  • Separate bottles of the Nando’s bastes are used exclusively for basting the vegetarian products.

Full ingredient listings are available in all of our restaurants if you wish to explore further! Ask to see the “Food & Menu Specifications” booklet.

Halal
Does Nando’s serve Halal Chicken?

For everything you need to know about our Halal Chicken please click here

We serve Halal chicken in restaurants where local demand for that particular product is high, combined with various other business factors. We welcome everyone into our restaurants, regardless of their beliefs. Because welfare is such a big priority for us, all of our chickens are pre-stunned as part of the preparation process.

Approximately one fifth of our restaurants are clearly labelled as serving Halal chicken, and a small proportion of all the chicken sold in our other restaurants is Halal. Nando's adheres to the strictest standards set down by the British Retail Consortium and all our suppliers are independently audited to ensure these standards are met.

What is a High 5/Black Card?

You’ve heard rumours about it – a card that magically provides free Nando’s for a whole year. The mythical Nando’s High Five card – can you be sure it really exists? Or, like unicorns and Robin Hood, is it just a legend – one created by Nando’s to give fans a holy grail to yearn for?  All we can tell you for certain is that no-one who’s requested a card, no matter how politely, has ever received one. Asking for one is simply the biggest taboo – a definite no no.
