Music Exchange playlist: Rudimental

Blog imageTaking over our latest Music Exchange playlist is the all-conquering drum and bass superstars Rudimental. The band, who crowned an amazing 12 months with the release of their second album ‘We Are The Generation,’ joined our party at Bestival this year with a fired up DJ set on top of our Cock o’ Van.

Piers talked us through some of the selections from their Music Exchange playlist, inspired by their childhoods, performances and the summer of 2015:

The Rudimental Family
We’ve included ‘Boy’ by Anne-Marie, an amazing track signed to our new label Major Tom’s. Anne-Marie appeared on our new album and we’ve included ‘Rumour Mill’ too, which also features Will Heard on vocals.

The Old Skool Classics
The playlist also features tracks that were on constant rewind growing up and still sound so fresh, such as The Streets’ ‘Blinded By The Lights’ – the vocal and lyrics on that are so on point. ‘Driver’ by Buju Banton is another massive tune from our youth, which always gets a reload in the clubs when we play it.

The Summer Anthems
We’ve dropped some of our favourite songs from an incredible summer, such as Swindle’s ‘Elevator Ft TC’.This tune is nuts, it has LEVELS, let me repeat LEVELS! The production is so great. And of course Todd Terje’s ‘Inspector Norse’ – a real banger for our DJ sets.

They Were The Generation
We wanted to include some of our inspirations, such as Toots And The Maytals. Their ‘54-46 Was My Number’ is some serious reggae vibes, and ‘Not Just Knee Deep’ by Funkadelicis an all-time classic to make you dance and sing your head off. George Clinton was the man that made funk, and helped create hip-hop.

Best Of The Year
We wanted to include a couple of our favourites from the year that still sound so good. ‘Lean On’ by Major Lazer is such a big track, and we love the slow bashment vibe to it. The Internet and Kaytranada’s ‘Girl’ is a special song too.
These guys have so much soul – really love this 90s vibe happening here.

Nando’s Music Exchange: From South London to South Africa

UK Music Exchange Blog 500x500
After meeting this summer at Nando’s Music Exchange launch event at the Roundhouse, South African electronic DJ/producer Muzi invited double MOBO award winner Stormzy to discover the exploding music scene in Durban.

Exploring the roots of South Africa’s bass-heavy street music, where the taxi drivers are the tastemakers and the cars are the clubs, the pair compare life, cultures, and musical inspirations.

Featuring music from both artists, including tracks from Muzi’s hotly anticipated first EP, ‘From South London to South Africa’ is our first documentary showcasing a series of creative collisions.

#NandosMusic: Shan McGinley

ShanHot on the heels of our recently launched Nando’s Music Exchange, we’ve been working with DJs, producers and artists to help find top talent from Nando’s birthplace – South Africa – and the UK. This month, DJ and radio presenter, Shan McGinley from IAmMusicTV and Roundhouse Radio has taken over our #NandosMusic Spotify playlist for a Music Exchange special.

Here, Shan talks us through some of the highlights from his playlist:

Black Coffee
South Africa has become a haven for electronic music and this movement is pioneered by inspirational producer, Black Coffee. His latest release ‘We Dance Again’ is without a doubt one of the best house music tunes of 2015, and formed the foundation for my entire playlist.

‘Ojuelegba’ is a feel good rhythm that had to be dropped into the playlist. I heard about it when Drake and Skepta collaborated on the remix, and I’ve had the song on reload ever since.

UK Grime and Dubstep
On the UK front, I wanted to illustrate some of the incredible artists whose African roots are embedded in their material for example JME and Benga. We’ve also taken a trip up north to Sheffield to deliver a new grime artist named Coco. His new tune ‘Big Bou Yah’ produced by Toddla T is an absolute belter, I reckon you’ll love it!

Upcoming Talent
Expect some game-changing tunes from up and coming stars set to blow in 2016 including SG Lewis, Mabel, Faze Miyake, Dua Lipa, Rayvn Lenae and more.

Nando’s International Master Griller has been crowned!

3 UK Grillers (Bruno,Amy,Shih)In our UK Championships, Amy, Bruno and Shih battled through rounds of PERi-PERi heats, and the heat was back on in our International Grillers’ Challenge last month!

Canada played host to our international competition, with 26 finalists from all over the world flying in for their turn at the title… and what a championship it was!

There was PERi-PERi passion a-plenty as Griller after Griller put their heart and soul into each round, judged on everything from their oven knowledge to their technical grilling skills, and of course, their chicken!

But there could be only one winner, and it was Sabina Chhetri from Australia who grilled her way to the top and earned herself the title of International Master Griller. Congratulations Sabina! A huge well done to Maurice from Zambia who took second place, and Rahul from New Zealand who grilled his way to third place.

Though not everyone could earn themselves a title; all of the international finalists performed spectacularly and deserve a massive congratulations. A special thanks to Amy, Bruno and Shih, who served up some tasty chicken while flying the Nando’s UK flag. Top work guys, you made us proud!

Next year’s International Master Grillers’ Challenge will be held in Malaysia, and we’re sure we’ll see a few familiar faces making a return… Generic 3

Nando’s Rule The Roost: Bestival

NAN_Bestival was 2015’s final festival outing for Rule The Roost, and it’s safe to say the Isle of Wight was an Extra Hot place to sign off for the summer.

Our festival food truck kept the party well-fed across all four days, while flaming hot acts performed above. The likes of Rudimental, Hudson Mohawke, Mistajam and Slaves kept energy levels peaking, and we were even treated to a B2B masterclass with two of the biggest DJs around, Artwork and Jackmaster.

Muzi, the hotly-tipped new South African producer and one of our special guests from our Music Exchange joined the party too. He produced one of the weekend’s standout sets on the Sunday afternoon, amping up the festival crowd with his tasty melding of electronic beats and local South African flavours.

It’s been an incredible summer touring the country with #RuleTheRoost, and we’re already excited for 2016 when we’ll be back for more #NandosMusic! Big love to all our DJs and bands who performed on top of our Cock o’ Van, but especially to the thousands of revelers who joined the party and made it such an unforgettable summer!

Nando’s Best of the Fest: Bestival (by Rob Da Bank)

Rob 5 Source - The Arts DeskThis weekend, Nando’s heads to Bestival, one of the hottest events in the summer and the final event of the festival calendar. Founded and curated by the one and only Rob Da Bank, Bestival is a world-famous party attracting some of the biggest stars from around the globe as well as many of the most exciting new bands and DJs out.

And if that’s not exciting enough, Rob Da Bank himself has curated a very special Bestival Playlist for us featuring 25 of the amazing acts you can expect to hear over a busy weekend. You can listen below. Here are six of the acts on the Playlist he’s especially keen for you to check.

The Jacksons

“Ever since they sent over the 90 minute set list, excitement has been building at Bestival HQ. They’re going to be playing all The Jackson 5 hits, and some of Michael’s too, so it’s going to be tune after tune, and going from them into Missy Elliot on the Main Stage on Sunday night is the perfect way to end Bestival 2015.

Mura Masa

“Ridiculously talented 19-year-old producer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from Guernsey in the Channel Islands who cites Hudson Mohawke, James Blake and Cashmere Cat as influences. The result is a heart-breaking mix of electronic soul and beats, and I’m really looking forward to seeing him on the Invaders stage on Saturday.”

“One of my favourite ever acts is also one of the finest live funk bands ever seen or heard, with classic tracks like ‘The Message’, Bra’, and ‘Brothers On The Slide’. The name Cymande is actually derived from a calypso word for dove, symbolising peace and love, which sums up this year’s ‘Summer Of Love’ theme perfectly!”

Jamie xx

“Jamie’s ‘In Colour’ is one of the albums of the year, if not the decade and has been the soundtrack to my summer. Tracks like ‘Loud Places’ and ‘I Know There’s Going To Be Good Times’ have become anthems in recent months across the airwaves, clubs and festivals throughout the land. Jamie has played with his band The XX at Bestival before and recently rocked Bestival Toronto with his solo live DJ set, and I can’t wait to see him play in the Big Top on Thursday.”

Four Tet

“Kieran Hebden is one of my favourite producers (check out his recently released ‘Morning / Evening’ album), and his genre bending DJ sets are the stuff of legend. So much so, we asked him to play twice this year, and he’s going to be playing the opening set on our Port stage and then closing the Bollywood tent on Friday night. Don’t miss him!”

Lion Babe

“I’ve been a fan of this US duo for a while and I’m really looking forward to their debut album which is due out later year. Their influences include Flying Lotus, Erykah Badu, J Dilla and Al Green, and you can definitely hear all of them in their tracks. They’ve been described as `laser-guided neo soul’ and having already worked with Pharrell and Mark Ronson, they’re on the cusp of something very special indeed.”

At Bestival, Nando’s will be unveiling our final Rule The Roost of the summer, featuring some VERY special unannounced guests performing on top of our Cock O’ Van, helping keep the party going for the whole weekend. Our festival residencies during 2015 have featured the likes of Ella Eyre, Hannah Wants and Jackmaster playing live, so you’d be clucking mad to miss out on the Isle of Wight this weekend.

Check out these artists and more in our Bestival festival Spotify playlist below.

The heat is on for our International Grillers’ Challenge

We’ve been all fired up for our Griller of the Year final this month, where our Grillers went head to head to show off their PERi-PERi skills.

It was no easy feat, we’ll tell you that! Our finalists battled through 340 restaurant heats, 33 quarter-final heats and 4 semi-finals to reach the ultimate UK final… and what a final it was!

Our Birmingham Bullring restaurant played host to our finalists and expert judges, as well as over 200 supporters. But there could be only one winner…

Let us introduce Amy from our Leamington Spa restaurant. Flames flickering, tongs in hand, Amy fearlessly grilled her way through the final to be crowned this years’ Griller of the Year.

With her top-notch technical skills and the tastiest flame-grilled chicken, Amy’s a shining example of our passion for PERi-PERi.

Runners up Bruno, from our Chichester restaurant, and Shih, from our Liverpool ONE restaurant, will join Amy and Nando’s grillers worldwide, at the International Grillers’ Challenge in Canada next month.

We wish Amy, Bruno and Shih the best of luck… we’re currently the reigning champs, so the pressure is on!
