Emma Willemse

Emma Willemse describes herself as a conceptual artist. She explains, ‘Through the making the answers will arrive’. Embracing this mantra along the unknown and often unpredictable creation process, Emma conceives pieces that ‘speak in metaphors’, using connections between memory, identity and place.

Willemse has exhibited extensively in South Africa and abroad, including London, Dakar, Grenchen (Switzerland), the Florence Biennale (where she received second prize in the installation category) and a solo exhibition in Paris. In addition to her artistic practice, she also works as a lecturer and curator and adjudicates in prominent art competitions.
